Dating from the 8th century AD, it is a distinctive find, as very few helmets from this period have survived. An inscription was engraved on the brass edge: 'In the name of our lord Jesus, the holy spirit and god, and to all we say amen, Our Lord, Christ.' The original may be seen at the Jorvik Museum.
